Today awarded the Nobel Mario Capecchi honorary degree in Medicine and Surgery
“Thanks to many years of research, Professor Mario Renato Capecchi has made an essential contribution to the understanding of the mechanisms of embryonic development, and the molecular basis of many diseases, opening up important therapeutic prospects for medicine.” These are the words of the president of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Catania Francesco Basile that summarize the motivation for the awarding of an honorary degree in Medicine and Surgery at the Italian-American scientist, Nobel Prize in 2007, along with Oliver Smithies and Martin Evans, for his research on embryonic stem cells. the solemn ceremony was held this afternoon in the auditorium of the Central building of our university , where Capecchi received the parchment from the rector James Pignataro.
